Yolanda Mthembu
 | Bio: | Yolanda Mthembu is from South Africa and graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Technology degree in Biomedical Technology from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. She wrote a board exam, with the Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists of South Africa (SMLTSA) and qualified as a Clinical Pathology Technologist. In 2007, she was employed as a qualified Clinical Technologist by PathCare Laboratories (Cape Town, South Africa). In 2009, she joined the University of Cape Town (South Africa) where she studied on a full time basis towards a BSc Honours (Medicine) Biochemistry degree, which she successfully completed.
She graduated with a Master of Science (MSc) degree in June 2012 in the Division of General Surgery, University of Cape Town under the supervision of Prof Anwar Mall. Her master dissertation studied the role of human breast milk mucus and mucins in HIV/AIDS. In 2013, she worked as a clinical chemistry part time lecturer at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in the Biomedical Sciences Faculty.
Yolanda is currently pursuing a PhD since November 2013 in systems glycobiology through the seventh framework program also termed the GastricGlycoExplorer (Initial Training Network) at Gothenburg University under the supervision of Jan Holgersson (MD. Prof.). Her PhD study focuses on the Probing of gastric cancer-associated glycosylation using recombinant mucin-type fusion proteins.
The seventh framework programme is not only a great initiative by the European commission, but also a great platform for young, upcoming and dedicated world-class researchers like Yolanda to be incorporated and trained in a system which aims to advance science by developing innovative ideas. Her hope is that not only will she learn more about science as a whole, but that she will also learn about the different cultures represented by the participants.
